Faridabad, city in north central India, in southern Haryana state, located 30 km (20 mi) south of Delhi in the southeastern part of the Punjab plains. The city is a part of the Delhi metropolitan area. Faridabad is mainly a center of manufacturing; products include metals, glass, plastics, and footwear. The Yamuna River is 15 km (10 mi) to the east of the city, and the Agra Canal, used primarily for irrigation, borders Faridabad to the east. These water sources provide fertile agricultural land for the production of wheat, vegetables, cotton, and sugarcane. Faridabad is also a center for agricultural trade. The city is served by a major rail line and a national highway. The nearest airport is in Delhi. Faridabad was founded in 1607 by Shaikh Farid, a treasurer for the Mughal emperor Jahangir.
