Vadodara, also known as Baroda, city in western India, in Gujarat State, on the Visvamitra River. Considerable trade in grain, flax, cotton, and tobacco is conducted here. The chief manufactures are textiles, chemicals, and pottery. Located in the city is the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Vadodara (1949). Vadodara has several palaces, the largest of which is Lakshmi Vilas, and several temples, including the Kirti. The city was the capital of the princely state of Vadodara until 1949, when Vadodara merged with Bombay State. Population (1991) 1,031,346.
