Porbandar, city in west central India, in Gujarat state. Porbandar is an important port on the Arabian Sea coast. It is a fishing and industrial center, producing silk and cotton textiles, chemicals, and building stone. Porbandar is connected by road and rail to Rajkot and Ahmadabad. It is a railroad terminus and has an airport. It has a small museum devoted to the life of Indian nationalist leader Mohandas K. Gandhi, who was born here in 1869. Porbandar was once the village of Sudamapuri. From 1785 to 1948 it served as capital of the former princely state of Porbandar. Population (1991) 116,671.
