Jamnagar, city, western India, in Gujarat State, on the Kathiawar Peninsula, near Rajkot. Poultry is raised, and cotton, millet, potatoes, and oilseed are grown in the area. Industries include cotton and flour milling, oilseed processing, dyeing, tanning, and the manufacture of chemicals, textiles, tiles, salt, and soap. Brass and copperware, embroideries, baskets, and pottery are made by local craft workers. Jamnagar is the site of colleges of arts and sciences and of medicine, affiliated with Gujarat University, and of a maharaja's palace. Bedi, 6 km (4 mi) northwest on the Gulf of Kachchh, is the city's port. Founded in 1540 by Rajputs, Jamnagar was capital of Navanagar princely state until 1948.
