Raipur, city in central India, capital of Chhattisgarh state. Raipur is centrally located in the state and serves as a regional trading center for local agricultural products, particularly rice. Industry is also important to the economy and includes oil milling, soap making, and electrical welding. Major rail lines form a junction at Raipur, and the city's airport handles domestic flights. The city has a medical college, a technology and engineering college, and musical academies. It is the seat of Ravishankar University. Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum displays collections in archaeology, anthropology, and natural history, as well as arts and crafts from the region. The city's historical attractions include remnants of a fort built in the 15th century and an 18th-century temple.
