Chhapra, town, Bihar State, northeast India, near the junction of the Ghaghara and Ganges rivers. Located in the low, fertile Gangetic Plain, Chhapra has relatively cool, dry winters and hot summers, with 750 to 1300 mm (30 to 50 in) of rain annually. Once a thriving river port and commercial center, Chhapra decreased in importance after the beginning of the railroad era.
