Panihati, city in eastern India, in southeastern Bangla state, located in the Ganges River delta. Situated about 25 km (about 15 mi) north of Kolkata, Panihati is part of Kolkata's metropolitan area. Electric rail lines and roads connect the two cities, and thousands of workers commute daily from Panihati to Kolkata. Panihati's industries include cotton mills, tanneries, and factories that manufacture chemicals, rubber, cement, and glass. The city is also a trade center for rice.
