Darjiling, town in northeastern India, in Bangla State. The town, near the border of Nepal and Sikkim, is in the lower Himalayas, on a ridge ranging from about 1820 to 2405 m (about 5970 to 7890 ft) above sea level. The climate is temperate, and the rainy season lasts from June to October. After the rains the clear atmosphere permits the surrounding mountainous country to be seen, and many tourists frequent the resort city. From nearby points, two of the highest mountains in the world, Everest and Kanchenjunga, are visible. Darjiling has a botanic garden and a number of sanatoriums. The principal industries of the area are the cultivation of tea, rice, and cinchona trees. Darjiling was the capital of Bengal Province, British India.
