K'ut'aisi, city in west central Georgia, on the Rioni River. It is an industrial center producing chemicals, textiles, and transportation equipment. An ancient settlement, the community, then known as Aea, was (8th century BC) the capital of the independent state of Colchis. It was captured by the Russians in 1773.
