Wenzhou, city in eastern China, in Zhejiang Province, a port on the Ou River. Wenzhou is in a mountainous region. Locally produced lumber, tea, and oranges are the principal exports. Manufactures include processed food and wood and paper products. The city was founded in the 4th century AD. It became an important tea port in the 19th century and was opened to foreign trade in 1876.
