Xintai, city in eastern China, in central Shandong Province. The Xintai region has significant coal resources and also produces gold, copper, iron, serpentine, feldspar, tourmaline, and quartz from its active mines and quarries. Industrial activities at Xintai include the production of machinery, electricity, chemicals, building materials, food products, and light industrial goods. The region specializes in three agricultural products that are exported overseas: giant peanuts, celery, and cucumbers. A rail line connects Xintai with Laiwu. Xintai was first established as a county during the Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). It was designated as a city in 1983.
