Tengxian, city in eastern China, in southern Shandong province, located east of Weishan Lake and the Grand Canal. A mining and quarrying industry at Tengxian produces coal, quartz, and marble. Tengxian also produces iron, machinery, chemicals, building materials, textiles, leather products, clothing, paper, cigarettes, beer, and wine. The area's primary agricultural products are wheat, corn, peanuts, cotton, and tobacco. The main rail line between Beijing and Shanghai passes through Tengxian. Tengxian's city museum commemorates the ancient history of the area. Artifacts dating to 7300 years ago have been found at Tengxian; there are also archaeological sites from the Spring and Autumn period (722-481 BC) and the Warring States period (403-221 BC). Tengxian stands at the heart of the ancient state of Teng, which was identified in Chinese annals during the Spring and Autumn period. Tengxian was designated as a county seat in 1953. However, this designation was rescinded in 1979, when the city was annexed by nearby Zaozhuang. The city regained its independent status as a city in 1988.
