Linyi, city in eastern China, in southeastern Shandong Province, located at the confluence of the Yi and Beng rivers 80 km (50 mi) west of the Yellow Sea. Linyi is a center for metalworking and electric power production, and also produces machinery, chemicals, building materials, textiles, paper, pharmaceuticals, and glass. Commercial crops grown and processed in the area include wheat, rice, soybeans, corn, and peanuts. Linyi was first founded during the Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). When Japan occupied Shandong Province during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), Linyi served as an important Chinese military and administrative post.
