Liaocheng, city in eastern China, in western Shandong Province, located on the Grand Canal about 50 km (about 30 mi) north of the Huang He (Yellow River). Industries at Liaocheng include textiles, papermaking, and electric power generation. Branch rail lines link Liaocheng to both the Beijing-Guangzhou and the Beijing-Shanghai railroad. There are several notable historical sites at Liaocheng, including a marble monument commemorating Chinese resistance to Japanese occupation during World War II (1939-1945). A settlement at Liaocheng was first identified in Chinese records during the Qin dynasty (221-206 BC). Liaocheng has been an administrative center since it was named the seat of Dongchang prefecture at the beginning of the Ming dynasty (AD 1368-1644). It was officially designated as a city in 1958.
