Laiwu, city in eastern China, located in central Shandong Province, at the center of a region rich in iron ore. Laiwu produces both coal and steel, in addition to machinery, chemicals, woven products, apparel, and paper. Special agricultural products include hemp and ginger. Laiwu also produces wheat, corn, and sweet potatoes. Laiwu is the site of several archaeological sites including a 50-m (164-ft) long section of defensive wall dating from the Chunqiu (Chinese for “Spring and Autumn”) period (722-481 BC).
