Dongying, city in eastern China, located in northern Shandong province on the southern bank of the Huang He (Yellow River). The Shengli oil field, one of the largest oil production facilities in China, is located nearby, and the refinery is the city's main source of employment. Dongying is also home to the main campus of the Chinese Petroleum University. Agricultural products in the area include wheat, corn, soybeans, and peanuts. There has been settlement in the Dongying area since at least the 6th century BC, when it was the birthplace of Chinese general Sun Tzu, author of The Art of War. Dongying was incorporated as a city in 1983. In 1986 Dongying established a sister-city relationship with Midland, Texas. Population (1991) 281,728.
