Shilipu, also known as Tongchuan, city in northern China, in Shaanxi province, 100 km (60 mi) north of Xi'an. Shilipu is a coal mining town, and produces cement, machine parts, agricultural equipment, chemicals, pottery, and porcelain. Shilipu is connected by rail and road to Xi'an, and by road to Yan'an. Historic points of interest include a pottery kiln excavation site and thousands of pottery pieces dating from the Tang (T'ang) dynasty (618-907) and the Song dynasty (960-1279). Archaeological remains indicate human habitation at Shilipu dating from 6,000 years. During the Northern Wei dynasty (386-534), an administrative office overseeing the copper industry was established, and copper long served as the city's economic mainstay. The city's growth was spurred when a railroad to Xi'an was completed in 1940.
