Baoji, city in northern China, in Shaanxi Province, in the Wei River valley. A transportation hub with rail connections to northwestern and southwestern China, Baoji is also a commercial and industrial center. Manufacturing industries, developed here largely after 1949, produce cotton textiles, railroad equipment, machinery, and paper. Baoji was founded as early as the 3rd century BC and received its present name under the Tang (T'ang) dynasty (AD 618-907).
