Shizuishan, city in western China, in the northernmost part of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Shizuishan is located on the banks of the Huang He (Yellow River) 100 km (60 mi) north of Yinchuan. The city is a major rail station on the Baotou-Lanzhou line and a collection and shipping center for agricultural products originating in Ningxia Hui and Inner Mongolia. Shizuishan is also an industrial center, producing coal, electric power, machinery, chemicals, cement, pottery, sugar, and iron. Notable historic sites include a section of the Great Wall dating from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644).
Archaeologists have unearthed prehistoric artifacts at Shizuishan. The area has been noted in Chinese records since the Qin dynasty (221-206 BC). Shizuishan developed primarily as a result of a coal-mining and coal-processing operation established there in the late 1950s.
