Wafangdian, city in northeastern China, in Liaoning Province. Wafangdian is located near the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula, about 270 km (about 170 mi) southwest of Shenyang, and 85 km (53 mi) north of Dalian. Wafangdian is an important mining region; about half of China's diamonds originate in the Wafangdian area. Coal and iron ore are also mined in the region, and marble is quarried just outside the city. Wafangdian produces petroleum, chemicals, machinery, woven goods, food products, leather goods, and building materials. Agricultural products include corn, peanuts, and cabbage. The city is connected by rail to Shenyang. Originally known as Fuzhou, the city's name was changed to Wafangdian (Chinese for “tile market”) in 1985.
