Chaoyang, city in northeastern China, in western Liaoning province. Located on the banks of the Daling River, at the northern foot of the Song Ling mountains, Chaoyang is the administrative seat of Chaoyang County. Agricultural products of Chaoyang include corn, sorghum, millet, wheat, and cotton. Industries include coal mining and the manufacture of coal, machinery, textiles, chemical fertilizers, and synthetic fibers. The Southern Pagoda and Northern Pagoda, built during the Liao dynasty (907-1125), and the Youxun Monastery, built during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), are in Chaoyang. Chaoyang was historically important as a garrison town. Military leaders and their troops stayed there as early as the Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn) period (722-481 BC). Chaoyang was designated as a city in 1959, and in 1986 was opened to foreign trade.
