Siping, city in northeastern China, in southwestern Jilin province. The city is located in the Dahei Mountains about 100 km (about 60 mi) southwest of Changchun and about 150 km (about 90 mi) northeast of Shenyang. Siping is an industrial center, producing processed food, machinery, building materials, chemicals, textiles, metals, electricity, and pharmaceuticals. The city lies on a major rail line between, and has highway connections to, Shenyang and Changchun. In 1947 a major battle took place in Siping during the Communist revolution, which ended in 1949, and there are several sites in the city commemorating the battle. Siping grew rapidly after the Communist government was established in 1949, and the city was designated a site for industrial development.
