Liaoyuan, also Liao-yüan, city, northeastern China, in Jilin Province, an industrial center in a rich coal-mining area. Locally produced coal supports an important thermal power industry; other manufactures include chemicals, fertilizer, machinery, processed food, and textiles. Liaoyuan began its modern development after large coal reserves were discovered here in 1911. The city was extensively rebuilt and expanded in the 1950s after suffering heavy damage in World War II. It was transferred from the former Liaotung Province to Jilin Province in 1954.
