Baicheng, city in northeastern China, in Jilin province, near the border of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Manufactures of Baicheng include textiles, pottery and porcelain, and leather goods. The main agricultural products of the area are soybeans and edible oils. Baicheng is located at the junction of three main rail lines that connect the city to Qiqihar and the rest of northeastern China. Archaeological relics found around Baicheng date from 2000 BC. Baicheng was established as a county seat, called Jing'an, in 1904. It was renamed Tao'an in 1914 and then Baicheng (Chinese for “White City”) in 1950, after its traditional Mongolian name Chaghanhot, which also means “White City.” The city was part of Heilongjiang province until the province's boundaries were redrawn in 1954.
