Pingxiang, city in southeastern China, located in western Jiangxi Province near the border of Hunan Province. Pingxiang lies in China's most important coal-mining district, south of the Yangtze River, and coal is the city's primary industrial product. Other goods produced in Pingxiang include paper, iron, steel, chemicals, machinery, electrical appliances, and food products. Pingxiang is also an important rice-growing area. Railroads connect the city directly with Shanghai to the east and large cities such as Changsha and Guizhou to the west. Notable sites in Pingxiang include a Confucian temple, the Yangqi Hill Putong Temple, and the Nielong (Evil Dragon) Cave. In 1898 one of China's first modern coal mines was established at Pingxiang. The mines in the area have continued to provide significant quantities of coal for China's iron and steel industry. Pingxiang has a small central urban district. The remainder of the population is scattered widely over the city's administrative area.
