Jiujiang, city in eastern China, in northern Jiangxi province. Jiujiang is located along the Yangtze River, or Chang Jiang, just west of the outlet of Poyang Hu, a large inland lake. The chief economic activities of the city include cotton production, oil pressing, and rice processing. Jiujiang is an important river port and is connected by railroad with Nanchang to the south.
Jiujiang was a customs station in the 3rd century and became a county town in 589. From the 17th to the 19th century it was an important center of the tea trade. In 1861 it was opened to foreign trade as a treaty port, and many foreigners came there to live. Jiujiang's export trade declined in the late 1930s, when a railroad opened between Nanchang and the seacoast.
