Jingdezhen, city, eastern China, in Jiangxi Province, a world-famous porcelain and ceramics center. Variant spellings of the name include Ching-te-chen and Kingtehchen, and the city is also sometimes called Fouliang or Fowliang. The ceramics industry, based on local kaolin deposits, began here in the 6th century AD. The city gained world renown for the manufacture of high-quality porcelain during the Song (Sung) dynasty (960-1279) and remained an important porcelain center until the kilns were damaged in the Taiping Rebellion (1850-64).
