Zhenjiang, city in eastern China, in Jiangsu Province, a port at the junction of the Grand Canal and Yangtze River. Soybeans and grain are often traded, and manufactures include processed food (especially flour), pharmaceuticals, machine tools, and pulp and paper.
Zhenjiang, which dates from at least the 8th century BC, gained prominence as a port on the Grand Canal in the Sui and Tang (T'ang) dynasties (AD 589-907). The city was opened as a treaty port in 1861 and had a foreign settlement until 1927. It was eclipsed as a center of foreign trade by the rise of Shanghai in the 1880s.
