Yangzhou, city in eastern China, in Jiangsu Province, on the Grand Canal. It is situated in a rich agricultural region near the Yangtze River. Leading manufactures are processed food, textiles, and traditional handicrafts; machine tools are also produced.
Yangzhou was founded during the Qin (Ch'in) dynasty (221-206 BC). It developed as a wealthy port after the construction of the Grand Canal during the Sui dynasty (adAD581-618) and was an important center for writers and painters in the 18th century. The city was called Yangtui from 1912 to 1949. It began its modern development, reversing a long period of stagnation, in the 1960s, stimulated by redevelopment of the Grand Canal as a major waterway.
