Yancheng, city in eastern China, located in central Jiangsu Province, along the Chuancheng River and the Tongyu Canal. The city's economy is supported by the production of textiles, food products, electricity, machinery, and cotton. The city operates a port on the Yellow Sea and also several canal ports. Yancheng's airport handles flights to and from Shanghai and Beijing. Yancheng (Chinese, “salt city”) has its origins in the production of sea salt, which began during the Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). During the Tang (T'ang) dynasty (618-907) the city's port facilities became important for trade, which eventually overshadowed salt production as the mainstay of the city's economy.
