Wuhai, also known as Haibowan, city in northern China, located in the southern part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, on the Huang He (Yellow River). The city's industries include coal mining, electric power generation, metalworking, and the production of chemicals and building materials. In addition, the Wuhai area produces grapes and dairy products. Wuhai lies on the Baotou-Lanzhou rail line and is also connected to national highways. The city has a number of interesting archaeological sites, including rock art dating to the Xia period (2205?-1766 BC) or even earlier. After coal was discovered in the region in 1958, the area's population grew considerably, and in 1976 Wuhai (Chinese for “dark sea”) officially became a city.
