Tongliao, city in northeastern China, in eastern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, near the Jilin Province border. The city is located about 250 km (about 160 mi) east of Changchun in the south central region of the grassy Dongbei Pingyuan (Northeast China Plain). The city has numerous industries producing machine parts, glass, chemicals, leather goods, electric power, paper, clothing, and handwoven goods, as well as pharmaceuticals, meat products, and candied fruit. The city is connected by rail to Shenyang and Beijing. Tongliao has a high degree of cultural diversity, with Han Chinese, Mongolian, Manchu, Hui, and Korean residents.
