Jining, city in northern China, located in south central Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, about 300 km (about 200 mi) northwest of Beijing. Jining serves as one of the economic centers of Inner Mongolia. Its industries include meat processing and packing, coal mining, electricity generation, and the production of alcoholic beverages and down-feather goods. Agricultural products of the region include potatoes, sugar beets, and wheat. Jining is on the Beijing-Baotou rail line. Jining was long known as Pingdiquan and served as the center of a large grazing area for nomadic herders. During the Qing dynasty (1644-1912) the small settlement there was placed under the administration of Datong, located 105 km (65 mi) to the south in Shanxi Province.
