Hebi, city in northern China, located in Henan Province on the eastern mountain slopes of the Taihang Shan. Coal, iron, and porcelain clay production support the Hebi economy. Industries at Hebi include metallurgy, electricity generation, metal casting, and the production of ceramics, pharmaceuticals, and paper. A branch of the Beijing-Guangzhou rail line passes through the city. Notable historic sites in Hebi include a Song dynasty (960-1279) coal mine and Song dynasty and Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) kilns, as well as examples of preserved traditional architecture. Hebi (Chinese for “crane cliff”) was first established as a village by that name during the Tang (T'ang) dynasty (618-907).
