Anyang, city in northern China, in Henan Province, in a coal-mining and cotton-growing region. Principal manufactures include cotton textiles and processed food. Anyang is located on the site of Yin, the capital of the Shang (Yin) dynasty (1600?-1050? BC). Archaeological work, begun here in 1928, has uncovered the remains of a royal palace dating from the 16th century BC, several royal tombs, and a collection of oracle bones chronicling early Chinese history.
