Shuangyashan, city in northeastern China, located in eastern Heilongjiang province, about 100 km (about 60 mi) south of the Russian border. The city's name means “pair-of-ducks mountains” and refers to two peaks northeast of the city. A major center for coal mining, Shuangyashan also produces steel, lumber, chemicals, building materials, textiles, electric machinery, and food products. The city is connected to the national railroad network by a branch line from Jiamusi. Nearby is the Shuangyashan area, which contains a protected tiger habitat and a number of historic sites dating from the Japanese occupation of China during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945).
Few people lived in the area before coal was discovered there in 1914. In 1928 a major coal mining operation was established on the site and in 1946 the area was first designated a county. Shuangyashan was established as a special mining district in 1954 and officially designated a city in 1956. Population (1991) 518,971.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Shuangyashan Information info
