Shangzhi, city in northeastern China, in southern Heilongjiang province. The city is on the Mayi River about 120 km (about 75 mi) southeast of Harbin. Shangzhi is situated in a region rich in forest resources, which contribute to the city's wood products industry. Other Shangzhi products include edible fungi, wool, ginseng, beer, pharmaceuticals, and dairy goods. Shangzhi is on the main highway between Harbin and Vladivostok, Russia, and has rail connections to Harbin. The area was first settled during the early Qing dynasty (1644-1912). In 1926 it was officially named Zhuhe. After the Japanese occupation of Manchuria (now Northeast China) in the 1930s and early 1940s, Zhuhe's anti-Japanese resistance movement was commemorated by changing the name of the city and surrounding county to Shangzhi, which means “valued aspirations.” Population (1991) 215,373.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation.
