Qitaihe, city in northeastern China, located in eastern Heilongjiang province near the Russian border. Qitaihe's economy is focused on its rich coal reserves, which are among the most productive in the country and an important resource for the iron and steel industries in northeastern China. Other important natural resources at Qitaihe include gold and marble. The city's industries produce steel, transformers, monosodium glutamate, beer, chemical fertilizers, and concrete. Qitaihe's industrial development began in 1958 when the first coal mines were opened. It was designated as a city in 1983.
