Mudanjiang, also Mu-tan-chiang, city, northeastern China, in Heilongjiang Province. It is a regional transportation and industrial center situated on the Mudan River (a tributary of the Songhua) in an agricultural and lumbering region. An iron and steel complex was built here in the late 1960s; other manufactures in the province include paper and pulp, rubber goods, processed food, and aluminum.
A small community until the 20th century, Mudanjiang began its modern development when reached by rail in 1908. During the Japanese occupation (1931-45) of Manchuria, it became an administrative and manufacturing center. It was looted of industrial equipment by occupying Soviet forces at the end of World War II but was rebuilt and expanded after 1949. Population (1991) 715,604.
