Bei'an, city in northeastern China, located about 250 km (about 160 mi) north of Harbin in Heilongjiang province. The city's administrative area includes extensive grasslands and forests. Bei'an has long been the site of large scale state-run farms, forestry projects, and factories producing agricultural implements. Agricultural products include soybeans, wheat, potatoes, and dairy products. Industrial products of Bei'an include machinery, pharmaceuticals, and candy, and a power plant in the city produces electricity. The city has rail connections with Harbin and Qiqihar. Bei'an, which means “Northern Peace” in Chinese, was first established in the late 19th century. It was officially designated a city by the Chinese government in 1960.
