Zunyi, city in southern China, in Guizhou Province. It is a regional transportation and industrial center; major manufactures include textiles, processed food, machinery, chemicals, and fertilizer. Deposits of coal, bauxite, and manganese ore are nearby.
Zunyi was founded in the 7th century AD but was of minor importance until selected for development as an industrial center in the 1950s. It is famous throughout China as the place where, in 1935, Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-tung) was acknowledged during the Long March as the dominant leader of the Chinese Communist Party.
