Jiangmen, city in southeastern China, in Guangdong Province, located on the south bank of the Xi Jiang in the Zhu Jiang (Pearl River) delta. Industry in Jiangmen includes machinery manufacturing, sugar production, and papermaking. Its economy is supported primarily by its port facility, which is the second largest in Guangdong Province after Guangzhou. Jiangmen (Chinese for “river gate”) began as a small boat landing, and grew into a trading center during the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) and the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). In the 20th century Jiangmen became an important transshipment point for locally produced sugarcane and wood shipped downriver from the mountainous areas of northern Guangdong.
