Baiyin, city in north central China, in Gansu province, about 75 km (about 47 mi) northeast of Lanzhou. Baiyin is located in a depression surrounded on all sides by mountains. The primary industry of Baiyin, which means “White Silver” in Chinese, is mining. It is the site of several mines, including a large scale copper mine, and serves as a processing center for copper, gold, silver, lead, and zinc. Agriculture in the region includes the production of wheat, corn, barley, edible oils, and melons. Baiyin is located on the Lanzhou-Baotou rail line. In 1953 Baiyin, then a small agricultural village, was targeted for industrial development by the national government. It grew rapidly, and in 1958 it was officially named a city.
