Pabna, city in west central Bangladesh, in Rajshahi Division, just north of the Ganges River. Pabna lies 75 km (47 mi) southeast of the city of Rajshahi and 120 km (75 mi) west of Dhaka, the national capital. The city's industries include jute and tea processing and the manufacture of cotton textiles and clothing. A network of roads, railways, and river transportation connects Pabna with the rest of the country. Local landmarks include the two-story Sitlai palace, built in 1900 on the northern banks of the Ganges, and the Taras Rajbari palace, built in the late 1800's. Pabna has several colleges affiliated with the University of Rajshahi, as well as a polytechnic institute. Population (1991) 111,808.
