Gazipur, city in central Bangladesh, in Dhaka Division, situated 30 km (20 mi) north of Dhaka, the national capital. Roads and rail lines link the two cities. Gazipur is the site of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, the largest such facility in the nation; it is known for developing a high-yielding variety of rice seed. Gazipur also has a military base and an artillery factory. Population (1991) 104,000.
