Mazar-e Sharif, city in northern Afghanistan, capital of Balkh Province, near Balkh. It is a commercial center of the Afghan Turkistan Region and a leading place of pilgrimage. The 15th-century mosque in the city is said to contain the tomb of the caliph Ali, the son-in-law of Muhammad.
