Newcastle, town in eastern South Africa, in KwaZulu-Natal province. Newcastle lies at the northern end of the Drakensberg Mountains, on the main road between Johannesburg and Durban. It is an industrial town, its economy centered on steelworks and on nearby coal mines. Newcastle was founded in the 1860s.
