Krugersdorp, city in northeastern South Africa, in the Witwatersrand region of Gauteng Province, near Johannesburg. The chief city of the West Rand District, Krugersdorp is a center for the mining of gold, uranium, and manganese, and has metalworking and tanning industries as well as chemical and paint manufacturing. The city contains a technical college, a large sports ground, and the Paardekraal Monument. The monument commemorates the victory of the Afrikaners, or Boers, over the Zulu in 1838 and was the site of the meeting of Afrikaner leaders in 1880 that led to the restoration of the South African Republic. Nearby to the northwest are the Sterkfontein Caves, where the remains of protohumans have been found. Founded in 1887, Krugersdorp was named for Paul Kruger, who was president of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1902.
