Johannesburg's parks are concentrated in historically white areas of the city; elsewhere recreational facilities are limited. Major parks include Joubert Park near the city center, Pioneer Park in the southern suburb of La Rochelle, The Wilds Botanic Gardens in Houghton, the Zoological Gardens and Zoo Lake in Saxonwold, the Melrose Bird Sanctuary, and the Melville Koppies nature reserve. Gold Reef City, a cultural center designed to recreate the atmosphere of a 19th-century mining town, is a popular tourist attraction. The Rand Stadium hosts boxing and soccer matches; Ellis Park is the principal site for rugby, tennis, and swimming, as are the Wanderers Stadium for cricket and Turffontein for horse racing.Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001 http://encarta.msn.com © 1997-2001 Microsoft Corporation.
