Johannesburg has several institutions of higher education, including the University of the Witwatersrand (founded in 1922) and Rand Afrikaans University (1966). The Witwatersrand Technikon (1925) specializes in technical training. Johannesburg is South Africa's leading cultural center. Its many theaters include the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, where opera, ballet, and concert performances are held, and the Market Theatre, the city's principal dramatic venue. The city's many museums include the Geological Museum, the National Museum of Military History, and the MuseumAfrica, which houses exhibits on South African history and prehistory. The Johannesburg Art Gallery exhibits both modern European and South African paintings. Other points of interest in Johannesburg include the Anglican Cathedral, designed by Sir Herbert Baker in 1926; the Madressa Himayatil Mosque, built in 1916 and later enlarged; and the Roman Catholic Cathedral, built in 1960.
